An Old Tappan toothache can be either a constant gnawing sensation in your cheek and jaw or the onset of sudden sharp pains. In either case the sufferer wants relief as soon as possible and needs the help of our doctor at Apex Endodontics. Often tooth pain is caused by extensive decay in a tooth that goes down into its root system and infects the pulp. A tooth’s pulp can become infected when bacteria and plaque get into the roots either from a large area of decay on the tooth’s surface or through a chip or crack in the harder outer layers of the tooth.
The pulp is the tooth’s soft inner core that stretches from the crown to the root canals and nourishes the tooth. The pulp is protected by the harder dentin, which is protected above the gum line by the tooth’s enamel and below the gum line by the cementum. When the pulp is infected it can cause an Old Tappan toothache and our endodontist will perform an endodontic treatment, also know as a root canal, to clear out the infection and restore the tooth to full functionality. During an endodontic treatment our doctor will first drill away any decay on the surface of the tooth and uncover all the toot’s roots. Miniature tools will be used to clean out the pulp from all the tooth’s roots. A mature tooth can live without its pulp getting nourishment from the surrounding tissue. Once the pulp has been removed from all the root canals they will be sealed with a rubber-like substance to protect them from re-infection.
Once the pulp has been cleaned out and the roots sealed our endodontist will prepare the tooth to be fitted with a porcelain crown. The crown will serve to further protect the tooth and its roots from decay as well as forming a new chewing surface or it. The end result of the root canal is that the Old Tappan toothache is gone and the tooth is restored to full functionality. Without the root canal treatment the pain would have increased, the infection spread and possibly formed an abscess. If you are having tooth pain call our office for a consultation.
